I met Peter through a mutual friend (Thomas—you may recognize him from the painting) who’d worked on a couple of movies with as a still photographer and visual assistant. I believe they’d recently wrapped up shooting of their second movie and were about to begin editing, when Peter gave me a call.
Peter's films (Cake, 2004 and Baby, 2008) were gritty and realistically violent, influenced by the LA drug culture, and the effect on struggling Asian communities in East LA.
For the logo, he wanted something guerrilla-inspired that would reflect the subject matter and also reflect their status as a small and independent film company working outside the Hollywood system. Peter had a pretty firm idea of what he wanted, and we collaborated to hone down the image in roughs. The final graffiti-like image has a touch of Banksy in it (which was the look we were going for).
The logo was animated for the credits by another friend of ours, Matt Tsang, over in London. Here's some frames from the actual title sequence.
